Clutch change Q4

Does anyone have any info regarding doing a clutch replacement on a Q4? From what I've heard, and what it looks like, it seems to be a pretty big job. Has anyone done a clutch change with the engine in the car? I am considering between either dropping the whole engine + subframe or just dropping the...

Re: 1996 Alfa 164 Cloverleaf (I'm back...)

Excellent work on the rims. Hoping to that to one of my speedline sets in the near future. I'm just lazy. Do you have any tips and tricks regarding polishing the rims? I'm guessing a lot of paint stripper to start with. And good work on getting the timing belt done. And please tell how the ferrari t...

Re: Q4 Viscomatic hoses (hydraulic lines)

Opening up this thread again. Had to make new hoses for Viscomatic on one of my Q4;s recently. I actually made them of AN lines and fittings. Used AN4 teflon hoses for everything. The Teflon AN hoses has a pressure rating of 275 bar, so they`re more than well suited for the job. Finding the correct ...

Beautiful 164 you've got your hands on! Will definitely follow this thread. And remember to post a lot of pictures!
You got very lucky with getting a lot of spares, as the supply surely is drying up for 164:s. Sounds like you made a great deal.

Re: ABS problems Q4

As I remember it differs between versions, main fuse on mine was under the hood on the firewall, near the coolant reservoir, just stuck on there. I think there should be some photos in the other thread but in case you don't find it let me know and maybe I'll dig out some more photos. I know it can ...

Re: ABS problems Q4

From my experience ABS faults an be electric related. Have a look at my thread, I also had the light on albeit without any clear cause, after many years of struggle I fixed it by cleaning the connections between the main ABS fuse and its holder: http://alfaromeo164register.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1...

ABS problems Q4

My ABS light is on, it looks like it passes self check, but as soon as i start driving, it lights up and stays lit. I tried reading the error codes with my Marelli tester, and the only fault code that came up was Fehler Steuergeraet, which would mean that the ECU is faulty. Then it says that Systemz...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Yesterday was test drive day. And boy did i have some fun. Visco works perfectly. I also bled the system with the tester, so now i have perfect pressure and piston movement!
Now i still have the ABS and airbag to crack next.

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Solved!! Replaced all lines and fittings for Visco and power steering with teflon AN4 lines. Rather difficult to find all the correct fittings. Also replaced the male brake line fittings for supply and return from visco to hdyraulic block with banjo fittings. Seems like the recharge valve was stuck...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

I will get a new hose manufactured by a local hydraulics shop today, so i will install it later tonight and see. If not, i think there could be a problem with the recharge- and/or proportional valve. According to the documents, the proportional valve is NOT PWM modulated, rather current modulated "T...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Today i continued diagnosing my Q4, and i noticed that the hose from 2 stage pump to Viscogroup, has a small hole, and was twisted pretty badly. I will remanufacture a hose quickly, and see if this was the reason. Sounds pretty dumb now that i have spent many hours with an oscilloscope, and only now...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Worth noting, that i haven't got any difference made to the piston position. Still at 0% all the time. Unable to bleed the system due to the low pressure. Another question, has anyone got experience with a white, almost foamy residue from the visco group? When i removed the sensor, it came out. But ...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Your signature contains 2 Q4's :) Is the other one running? If so, you can put the tester on that and see the pressure level. From memory the 4WD system goes up to app. 100 bar when fully functional. All the values should be in the manual, which I assume you have downloaded? The other Q4 is a sligh...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Measured today that the recharge valve gets 12V when connected. The voltage then drops to around 3V when the AWD light lights up. (Around 2-5 min after start up). If i remove the fault code, it starts all over again. Seems like the hydraulic group is getting some fluid atleast. Good thing i was wear...

Replaced the pressure sensor in Viscomatic group today. Now the pressure sank to 6 bar, and won't rise from there. Goes around 5-6 bar. Ideas?

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Also, does the light come on immediately when starting the engine, when driving and going above a certain speed or...? If you erase the error code when driving, does the light come on again? All of this can indicate where the problem lies. Comes on after approx. 2-5 min driving. Passes self check e...

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

I noticed that the Recharge valve only gets 3.7V, so i fixed that and now it gets 12V. But still no difference in hydraulic pressure. At least that's what the tester's telling me.

Re: Hydraulic pressure, value too low

Maybe this? http://www.alfaromeo164register.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1962 Could that be the problem even if i don't seem to have hydraulic pressure? Only around 30 bar at all times, no change when driving, or revving. I've read that the Coupling should engage even at around 20 bar. I don't hear the ...

Hydraulic pressure, value too low

More problems with my Q4. Warning light for AWD lights up after a couple minutes of driving. The error code is Hydraulic pressure, pressure too low. Wrong oil was used in the system, so i changed the oil and flushed it twice. Still the same problem. Piston is all the time at 0%, and pressure reading...

Steering angle sensor (Q4)

Hi. I connected my Marelli tester today to my Q4, and it showed an error code for the steering angle sensor. And indeed, when the steering was straight, the voltage was 4,97v. After a lot of swearing i got the sensor loose, but i am unable to get it to 2,5v. It just jumps between close to 0 and 4,97...

Steering rack for Q4

Hi! I have a leaking steering rack on my Q4. The leak is from the right hand side. Due to the steering angle sensor, the rack seems to be a pretty rare part to find for sale nowadays. Does anyone have any experience with fixing the Q4 steering rack? (Changing gaskets etc?). If not possible, would an...

Q4 and standalone ECU.

I am thinking about installing a standalone ECU in a Q4, due to a series of quite big engine modifications (incl. 3.5 conversion, injectors, ported heads and so on). Does anybody have any experience about this? I was thinking about possibly a Haltech ECU, as it seems to have quite good flexibility c...
