The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
On the RH frontwing of the 164, under the bonnet, the VIN is printed.
It consist of several components:
For example: ZAR*164000*06169195
Z is the country code, in this case Italy
AR Stands for Alfa Romeo
164000 stands for 164 and a 3 digit follow-up; i.s.o. 3 zero's, other follow-ups are known as well i.e. A20 for a Turbo.
The 8 digits behind this is the number than is the real identifier for model on which spare parts can be ordered.
If someone enters this number in EPER, they can retrieve the production date and year.
06169195 is a 164 TD with VM84A engine made in December 1989.(My first 164, bought in1990)
According to the table on Alfa 164 digest [164 prod),
the first produced 164 was 00001011; a 3V6 produced in February 1987. When you add a number, the next car produced was a TD, which is rather strange since the TD wasn't introduced until 1988. Next numbers are TD's as well, maybe a set of prototype/testcars.

It is correct that they are Diesels. When Alfa Romeo tested the cars everywhere, most of them were TD's.

I love those old pictures!
The production for the 164 started in februari 1987; the proto's were already tested in the years before for the TSpark and the 3V6 .The TD wasn't launched until late 1988, so most likely these first TD's were proto's.
Some nice pictures from the testcell for engines at the Arese plant. The engines look like first series V6's or the 164. Note the instrumentpanels and the way they are 'McGyvered' to the wiring. It seems there is a kind of Torqueadapter where the gearbox normally is. (a close look reveals that the milage indicator still reads zero on both instrumentpanels.)

Someone on another forum just told me that VIN number and chassis number is not the same, wright or wrong? He says you can not identfy your specific car with the chassis number on the plate in engine compartment. He says it was just in the US that VIN numbers was used. I dont know but mine is identified as a red Q4 made in march 1995 when i enter the chassis number in Eper in the VIN field.

Another website to find out the year of production of your 164 is this site
https://www.fiatdalys.lt/en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Worked for as the eper site did not want to give me the date of production.
