The problem with your car sounds to me like a fuel supply issue.

About the program, does it not find a port, when you start it? If not, that is a problem with your pc or the cables. It is the correct cables you have. Is there a red light on the main blue part, when you connect it to the pc? If not, you have no connection. And make sure that you actually have 12V supply. Some of these cables can be defective, even when new!

If it does find a port, you need to select the correct Motronic unit (3.7 for the Q4).

If it can start, but stops almost immediately, it sounds to me that it is not getting enough petrol.

If it can not find a port, then something is not correct with the pc setup for the cable.

When that is ok, you need to turn the ignition on.

There is a red and black wire on that cable + the 3pin black plug. For the red and black cable (NOT the 3pin plug) you need to supply 12V, just like you put red to '+' and black to '-' on a car battery - which can also be used in this case.
