1996 164 Q4 speedsensor and thermostat and abs

For the technical things.

1996 164 Q4 speedsensor and thermostat and abs

Postby Runet » Sat Sep 10, 2016 11:00 am

ZAR164(168)00006324797 is the number of my car.
Need to discuss a few issues:
Even if the car stands still, the ECU say vehicle speed is 186kmt. Where is the sensor giving this kind of info?
Is it the abs speedsensor, or is there a sensor on the rear axle? Others?

Also I need a new thermostat. Problem is to find one. Do You know any other cars/engines using the same one?

There is no connection between the abs-unit and the ecu. Where to start search?

Any help will be higly appreciated :D

Mine did 328km/h at a stand still. Replaced crank shaft sensor 60595754 and all was good. If this is not good, it can also create difficulties starting the car.

Have you had the diagnostic SW connected to the car? This can also connect to the ABS. If there is no connection, you will have to find out if everything is plugged in, then start measuring.

As far as I'm aware the thermostat is the same across all V6 164s, so finding one shouldn't be too difficult.

Hmm...
Yes, diagnostics done.
How can crank shaft sensor say anything about speed? Means its Connected to gearbox?

Thank You all! This is only way to get more wise :D

I just noticed your other forum topic, where you show a picture of your damaged intake sleeve. It just so happens that a member on here (artiz1 I think) owns a company that produces such items, and he has started manufacturing Q4 intake sleeves :)

I need to buy one too at some point...

EBspares dont have. I checked last week.
I normally buy from here:

Is it same thermostat on the 3,0 166 and my 164 Q4? Price was ok from here of it fits.

About the speed stuck in 186kmh:
5894214 is a sensor in the viskomatic "gearbox". Is it possible that this sensor gives the info about the speed?

I think the speed signal is taken from the speedometer to ECU and splitt to viscomatic. The ecu is taking it from there, ref montronic manual.

Someone know where the speed sensor i17 is in the engine room/gearbox? The signal goes from the speedsensor i17 to the cluster and there converted to other system that needs this signal. The speedometer is function now and then so need to check the sensor

Found the speedsensor, hard to get access to, but i found some corrosion on the connection. Cross my finger for a easy solution  , ABS was defective CPU, therefor no ABS light to the cluster. The CPU is sending 12V to the cluster to light the ABS lamp, when the CPU is broken there will never be light on the ABS lamp. Still working with the speed signal to the ECU, found out that it shows from 34km/t to 330km/t

So did you replace the crank shaft sensor?

So do you think its the crank shaft sensor, I have not change it. Will order one even its not any fault detected by ECU

I forgot you had this thread going :)

I think the easiest would be to replace it and see what happens. I have had different symptoms the 2 (or is it 3?) times this part has failed in my car...
