ABS relays - how to remove them?

Postby Alfan » Mon Oct 31, 2016 6:18 pm

I have put in another ABS pump with electronic unit in my Q4. Unfortunately, the pump motor relay does not work and on the other one, the solenoid relay does not work.

As you can see in the photos, these relays are fixed and according to a technician at work, they are welded on, then put in the moulded unit.

Has anyone tried replacing these relays? And succeeded?

I am considering if the connections can be cut off, and then placing a similar, separate relay in some way... Any input is much appreciated! :)

I guess no one has tried this, so I hope that I can update this with a solution later.

More to follow - I hope.... :)

The relays are welded to the circuit board.
You can cut the connections and replace the relay with any other relay with correcet specs.

If I remember correctly, they are heavy 50A ones.

good luck

Hi

I have also problem with ABS system, are you sure that it is the relay that is faulty? I found out that its the electronic module that has failed. And therefor you dont get any power to number 85 on the relay(have 12+ on 86). I also have 12 V in to the ecu, but nothing happens. So its some electronic problem inside ECU. Dont think its a easy repair for me  , the electronic unit are impossible to get hold on?

I have tested different units, all with some kind of problem, so yes, pretty sure it is a relay issue on 2 of them.

I have not gotten further with it yet...

I have tried it some time ago with no success. Moreover, I found the relays and their base connectors very difficult to solder (one leg was broken off). It just didn't stick for whatever reason. I'm no soldering expert, but be careful.

I have also sacrificed one faulty unit and opened it up. I would say don't do it, I don't see any way one could examine and fix whatever is faulty inside without dedicated equipment.

They are welded and I don't know how to get around that yet. I don't think that I will get this solved before putting the car away after winter...

I will update when I have new info, but if others have knowledge regarding this, I am definitely interested!
