Replacement for shock absorber upper mount

Did you find a part on another type or make car that fits the 164? We love to hear about it!

Replacement for shock absorber upper mount

Postby MikeCZ » Wed Jun 28, 2017 6:56 am

Hello guys,
I would like to open this topic for discussion about (mainly front) shock absorber upper mounts on Super versions.
Problem is that shose are getting very rare and it's almost impossible to get some new - which is even more terrifying for someone who use this car as a daily driver :?
Anyway, do you have some suggestions, where they can still be found? Or some replacement that could be use? Universal/racing/etc. that would fit?
I have measured the PCD (pitch circle diameter) for the mount bolts and it's roughly 93mm. But the smallest universal mount I have found is 100mm.
Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated...

+1, I was just going to write about this. I need to replace the top shock absorber mounts on my Q4 as well.

For Q4, we are basically talking about parts (for complete overhaul):

60511574 (x2)
60511577 (x2)
60511566 right (x1)
60511567 left (x1)

I don't know where to find the parts, but 60606640 (no. 14 in photo) might be possible to replace with the version for FWD:

We really need number 14 and 12. I'm sure there is some replacement that will fit either from FWD or some other car even. Please report here if you've done this already. I will be researching as well as I get some clanking noises from my upper mounts.

(Post edited not to confuse people, posted photos were of rear strut assembly instead of front)

AlfaWhiz wrote:I had a quick look at my spare strut set for the Q4. Unfortunately to my eye they look nothing like the rest (24V, 2.0 TS, etc.). Don't mind the rust, will be renovated some day.

The entire top mount looks different compared to the standard part. Online photos of 60606640 (Q4) are not reflecting the differences. Any experience with this?

Your photos are displaying the rear strut assembly of the Q4. I am sure you cannot take parts from rear struts on FWD's and use for the Q4 rear. Front vs. front might be possible.

Ooops... No wonder they look completely different then. This was not my intention. To be honest, I never had them out of the car and I obviously didn't pay enough attention when digging the spare set out. I assumed this is the front pair. Looking at them right now, obviously it is not the case.

I will take a couple of photos of the front on the next occasion and will report back afterwards.

You can always make a new thread for the rear shock absorber upper mount with those photos ;)

So those are the front struts:

Indeed looks visually the same as all other 164 front strut mounts. Maybe some parameters inside were different, but I doubt it. Most probably different OE number to charge more $ for Q4 parts, and the usual tendency to over-complicate catalogues.

Wow, your are way more rusty then mine :) Anyway, I have managed to get hold of two new upper bearing (one Monroe from Poland and one OEM from Italy - last on eBay  ) and I kept the old one - so I can measure them and we can compare them.
Also riprex was in touch with Lemforder if they could manufacture some and they said yes - approximatel 60E/one mount, which is not so devastating, but we would have to take at least 50 :D (so sets for 25 cars)

Good info, thanks MikeCZ! :D The possibility to have them made already makes me happy. At some point we can probably gather enough interest, maybe a parts shop could be involved to stock them up and buy 10-20 sets.

My struts on the photo are a spare set from eBay I got some time ago, mainly for the Boge shocks. They were inexpensive, so there's that and the rust is as I believe because the donor car had to be sitting in very wet conditions (owner said underside was rusted), but they don't have many kms on them. I'm planning to refurbish them completely at some point.

I was able to track the front upper mounts from autodoc.de shop, I'll see if they really have them still in stock and report back here.

That would for sure be interesting! I suggest to also put this info on Alfabb, if it hasn't already been done.

Well only question is, who will arrange it :)
If counting correctly I think at least 4 sets would be taken from CZ and I guess at least the same amount from PL.
Here are at least 3-4 another interested persons, so it's 12.

This is what I managed to find after a couple of months looking through various sources. Probably one of the last ones available, and the price was reasonable. Posting photos so everyone knows how they should look like brand new.
