164 Q4 injectors

Did you find a part on another type or make car that fits the 164? We love to hear about it!

164 Q4 injectors

Postby AlfaWhiz » Tue Aug 02, 2016 12:39 am

Good news: I've recently replaced all 6 injectors in my Q4 with the newer type, used in later 3.2 and GTA engines.

Bosch part number is: 0280156038

The new injectors are red and have 4 flat nozzles. The height and o-ring diameter are the same, as is the flow rate, therefore the fit is generally perfect out of the box, there is however one modification that has to be made. The newer injector does not have the grove for the older type of retaining clip, this has to be fixed with careful use of a Dremel tool.

I've placed the injectors in a rotating assembly (specially constructed jig) and very carefully rotated them against Dremel tool with a flat cutting disc. The result was actually perfect, but be sure to measure good (the new injector actually has visible molding mark right where the grove should be).

Advantage is first and foremost the cost, 6 injectors of the newer type cost the equivalent of one of the original ones (yes, all 6 for the price of one), and obviously you get much better spray pattern.

Enjoy! :D

Some new thoughts:

munition wrote:Good tip to kill the ecu!
The red valves have a resistance of 14.5 Ohm, whereas the original valves have 15.9 Ohm. This results in 10% higher current in the ecu, which is not good at all... You could install an additional resistance between the ecu outlets and the injector's plugs in order to compensate the higher current. But then the injection flow would be too less because of the General lower capacity of the red valves (172g/min to 183g/min).

So far it's been good for me, but who knows. :?:

Some simple math:

Code: Select all
I = U / R = 12 V / 14.5 Ohm = 0.83 A
I = U / R = 12 V / 15.9 Ohm = 0.75 A

Difference is + 0.08 A.

Thanks for posting. I would reckon the safety margin on the load of the ECU should be able to handle the +10%, but as you wrote in the other thread, please post your long-term findings.

No issues with the new injectors after some thousands of km. I do definitely recommend them! :)

The 164 24V engines have the same injectors as the BMW M3 and M5 had then. So, you can buy parts at BMW dealers as well.
