The 8.32 engine and the 164

Post by 164 TD » Sun Jan 03, 2010 12:56 pm

This topic has already ran over many fora but so far no-one picked up the challenge and actually did it, building a Thema 8.32 engine in a 164 !

Physically I don't think it is and impossible mission if you have 2 righthands, a 8.32 engine with cables and motronic and some understanding about electronics.

I discovered over the years that there are quite some similarities between the 164 and the Thema. One of the users (JRX 164) used to have a Thema 24V engine build in his 164; this was a one to one fit except for the top enginemount.
If you look at the subframe of the 164 and you compare that with the subframe of a Thema, you will see that all the mounts are in the right place.(The aft shockmount looks a little bit tilted however, but this aft shockmount could be used from a donor Thema.

The Plan has the following steps;

1) Win Newyearseve lottery*
2) Retire early/ instantly
3) Buy 164 QV (first series) and 8.32 (donor)
4) Do the job !

* For the 22nd year in row, I didn't make it!

Here a pretty clear picture (From my 8.32 manual) how the aft mount is slightly tilted.

i think mechanicly wise it is a perfect fit. electronics will be different, but that ain't a prob for you.
the 8.32 is infact a changed Ferrari 308 QV engine, maybe more fun to try that one, thats more a 'race' engine then the 8.32

bummer the pictures are no longer on here!
Sounds interesting but what is an 8.32 engine?
Why swap a perfectly good 3.0 V6 for one?
I'm guessing it must be something pretty special. It has piqued my interest anyhow.

Thanks for mentioning it.

A while ago we changed the structure of the site and a tiny little change in the path of the picture and it won't work anymore.

Now the pictures are all back.
