164 TD serious crash.

Post by x3mperformance » Sat Dec 28, 2013 2:53 pm

Hi there.
Been some time since last post.
But i'm still active and have still my 164Q4's and until resent, also a 164 TD.
That car is about to get it's history revealed here, at least the few last month until sudden death. The 22. December 2013.

I must inform you.
I was alone in the car, and i am ok. :D

But let me introduce you to my TD...

Image
Note the footwell...

I must say, that even an old car, as long as it's rust free and well maintained, is a really safe place to be.
And the 164 is a proof of this.
What happend?

I had a wonderfull day, where i had bought a 85' Alfa GTV 2,0 which should entertain me all summer.
The weather was mild, road was moist, not wet, and oly light rain on and off.
I was almost home from a 500 km trip, 60 km left, and i overtook another car, speed 120 km/h.
I eased off the throttle, and took of some speed while entering a soft curve to the right.
Here i register something odd, and i think "What the F#%#... " there was suddently a complete white road!!!
3 centimeters of frozen hail. It was like driving on marbel balls, i feel the car starting a slide to the left with the rear, i hit the throttle, no responce, i start counter steering, no responce.
I look out of the side window. Ditch and trees...
I prepare myself for impact.
Closes my eyes, grab the sterring wheel and leans a bit to the right.
Havoc.... Then complete quiet.
Opens my eyes, and nothing is where i remember it should be.
Something touches my upper left leg, What the... That was the top mount of the seatbelt, i unbuckle.
Then i starts feeling pain in my lower left leg.
I realize my foot is outside, i pull up in my pants, and see my foot is in a very odd angle, dangeling... Ouch!
i get my leg inside, but can't seem to find room for both feet in the footwell... I can also only feel 1 pedal.

At this point i hear a car comming and stopping.
People arrive and starts helping.

Soon pro help was there, doctors rescue'ers and police.
All telling me, that when they look at the car first time, there first thought was. "No one can survive that..."
Front door was torn open, enginecompartment bend 90 deg to the right, all galss in front, left side and rear was exploded, trunk was deformed but still looked. Car was 1,5 meter longer than normally....
And i cut a tree down, with a diameter of a 1/2 meter, (Impacted in the front part of the door/footwell)
The steering column and steering wheel was out through the front window, and the back of the drivers seat was broken. The clutch pedal was broken off, the brake pedal was bendt over and hitting the throttle to max.

I was soon at hospital, within 1 hour from accident. I had several Xray examns, i was scanned several times for internally damage, also scanned for brain damage.
And first after 4 1/2 hour they realized i had only a fractured left leg, and a small scratch over my left eye. Here i got rid of a nasty back and neck support that immobilize any movements.
That's all, i am already at home again, and i have been operated with a metal rod inserted in the hollw part of my bones secured with two screws in top and two in the bottom.
I may steep full force on it, as soon as the wounds from the operation heals.

I think i now can say that i shaked hand with death, but told him. "See you later, pal."

Looking at the wreck, it's amazing what human body can take, but the car helped me survive.
I was not trapped inside, or my feet was not trapped between anything. Had i not broken my left leg, i litterely could have walked away!

Have a nice holliday
and drive carefully.

Unbelievable, Rene! Truly shocking pictures! You did escape death for sure; the floorsill broken and I can not even explain where the front and rear door ended up (or were they removed by the rescue team?! Amazing that you "only" broke your foot. Glad you are back to tell the tale! And yes, also my best wishes for a happy and safe New Year to you!

Alfa East.
Thanks.
And the doorpost and reardoor was only removed to get acces to me. I had to be on a stiff plate in full lenght when they wanted me out.
That was the only thing altered by the rescuers.
The front door was "gently" opend by the impact with the tree... Tells a bit about the forces involved.

And your right, the pictures tells a different story than i live on to tell. :D

Here's a picture from the front.

The beer and coke cans are from the trunk, 9 box'es of beer and 4 boxes of coce bought in Germany without tax. (A local Danish sport...)
No alcohol was included in the driving.

Holy

Glad to hear that you got out of it that well. From what I can see, it was a good thing that you were driving the facelifted version with better side protection.

Get well and Happy New Year :)

OUCH dude! Glad to hear you are ok apart from the broken leg. It is good to know that the 164 is good at protecting its occupants in an accident though. I hope your leg heals well and quickly. Sorry your nice car is now dead.
Best wishes
Tom

Just an small update, on my health. :D

I have been at rehabilitation training two times now.
And i'm walking ether just with one Crutch or totally without. (Not running, but a "funny" looking slow walk)
But, hey, it's only 24 days since the accident, so whheeeeee. :D :D :D
And i was out driving, alone yesterday. Nice to be mobile again, although it's in a Swedish Tractor.... Volvo 855 TDi Automatic.
Life is gaining strenght again for me, my mood is getting better and better, as i progress with my walking.
Have a nice week guys.
Drive carefully.

Holy moly Rene......

Hard to believe you got out of the car with "just" a fractured leg. I can imagine why they wanted to scan you several times...
Glad you made it, i suppose all angels went down to help you with this accident.

Great to here that recovering goes well.....

Hi guys.

I was at the crash site last week, first time since accident, and my daughter was with me.
I was amazed to see how badly the trees was scarred, two, not only one... was broken of in 15 cm height, spare parts scattered, relays, hoses, insulation, wires, headlight washer nozzles, gas shock from enginehood... And the plate with the etched serial and chassis number.
All good memories littering the wood. Now cleaned up, almost.
I cant remove the tracks in the forrest bed or in my mind.
And my daughter at 4, asks me why i did not steer the car away from the trees... Think she is sorrry for dad. I really love her. :D

But it is not so bad. No.
I has been at the hospital for at check up. The asked me to gear down, i was pushing too hard to recvover...
I only have to wait for 1 muscle to grow fully back together, and i am 100% back to normally state.
I can push 80 kg in leg press, with the injured leg alone. 1x.
I can do 90 kg 3x12 with both.
I cycle 25 minutes at a stationary by-cycle.
I do walk 15 minuts at a tread-mill.
And i can almost walk normal.
I need, i want and i have to... Stamina and a goal orientated mind has brought me here now.
I am cosidering my return to work in a couple of weeks.
I have actually applyed for a new job, too.
I have planned a trip to Thailand to skydive with a really close friend. (Who actually broke his left lower leg the 27 of December 2013. Sounds familiar???)
I plan to take flying lessons and get cartificat to fly a plane.
So, one broken leg and a dead car, do absolutely not mean that the world ends...

Most visitors here go scubadiving but hey, why not as long as the friend did not break his leg skydiving.... I do know it's quite cheap to do flying lessons here; I did a trial hour but decided against going for the license as I would have to do the exam in Philippines and they would not count my flying hours I did here. Became too time consuming.
