My Auto gearbox drives me crazy

Post by obenhaus » Thu Aug 21, 2014 2:24 pm

A few days agon I just came back home from holidays. My 164 took me from Hamburg via Zurich to the Riviera and via Bavaria back to Hamburg. So I had the joy to cross the alps twice and to drive a lot of high speed on German Autobahn. Both are places that do not comply well to the Auto gearbox.

Sometimes I ask myself I just have to adjust the Auto gearbox - this means the electronical controller: In "AUTO" mode the gearbox shifts early so that the engine gears at low revs. On the other hand in "SPORT" mode the engine revs until the end each time, even at contant speed the transmission does not shifts to higher speed.

When going on highway constantly at 100 - 120 km/h in "Auto" mode gearbox is in 4th speed. While accelerating it shifts down to 3rd just to shift up again a short moment after at 120/125 km/h. Even a kick down does not give the signal to rev off.

On the other hand in "Sport" mode you don't need to kickdown but just to slightly accerate and the gearbox shifts down one, two speed at once and you think the engine explodes in your face.

Is the C.A.E. so less balanced in character? Or is it a matter of adjusting it properly?

I have far fewer opportunities than you to do high speed cruising here in Thailand due to the nature of the highways and road and traffic conditions. Basically, I think your auto box functions as it is supposed to but for those particular instances and your driving style maybe a manual would suit you better.

I am just not sure about one aspect you describe: "When going on highway constantly at 100 - 120 km/h in "Auto" mode gearbox is in 4th speed. While accelerating it shifts down to 3rd just to shift up again a short moment after at 120/125 km/h. Even a kick down does not give the signal to rev off."
I thought that when you use kickdown in "Auto" at that speed it indeed shifts down one gear but I thought it should keep that (3rd) gear until you hit the rev limiter (so, kickdown -temporarily- triggers the "Sport"-function) and it shift up to 4th gear. You have to keep the gaspedal floored though. Or if you have reached the speed that you want (but it's not yet at the rev limiter), you ease off the gas and it immediately shifts to 4th.

It suits my driving style perfectly but I can imagine that on German Autobahn with the average speeds there it might not be ideal.

Hello to Thailand,

you are right, a manual suits better my driving style. But the manual one drives you crazy in city traffics. The 1st gear is sooo long that at idle speed the car runs twice fast as most cars do. Thus you have to grind the clutch all of the time. Driving on German Autobahn makes you recognise why Auto gearbox was sold in numbers in USA and CH only.

I do not understand where the advantage of the "electronical controller" is opposite to the one of the V6 12V auto. I mean is this the computer intelligence of early 90ies to offer a black or white solution? What about the full mechanical auto transmission of the 12V, does it act different?

That I do not know. Any members here with a mechnanical auto here? The mechanical one also did not have the "Sport" and "Snow" programme. Although I have used the seat heater once for a shivering, aircon-chilled lady I must admit I never tried the Snow programme.

I will have to try out the kickdown shift speed from 3rd to 4th though and let you know when it shifts.

The "ICE" mode works well. It starts in 2nd gear. So the power gets a bit smoother to the wheels. In addition it seemed to me (while using it last winter on snow covered road at the Arlberg) as it cares that the engines does not rev high (but maybe I am wrong).

It's even nice on wet roads in each season.

Of course, "ICE" mode, not "Snow". Sorry.
