Greetings from Canada

Post by dnicholes » Mon Jan 04, 2016 9:10 pm

Hello fellow 164 owners. I am a new member, but have been an Alfa owner since 1967. I live in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, which is just north of Maine, USA. My 1992 164L has 130,000 miles and I have owned it for 2 1/2 years. It is a daily driver and collects about 4,000 mile per year. I have attached a picture of it taken in April, 2014. For those of you who are horrified by my apparent mistreatment, be reassured. After the picture was taken, I brushed off the snow and put it in the garage to thaw out properly. Even in our cold weather, it always starts and with proper snowshoes makes its way through the streets. I do wish that the Q4's had been brought to North America.

I bought this car on ebay in July 2013 from the son of the original owner in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Since, I have had typical 164 maintenance issues, but having owned another 164 a few years ago, I expect them. I estimate that I am spending about $2,000 Canadian per year on maintenance. That is no doubt more than many of your are accustomed to, but I am a chequebook mechanic. I learned long ago that I actually save money by working a bit harder to earn money to pay my competent Alfa mechanic.

I look forward to reading your experiences on the forum and getting to know you all more.

Welcome Dan! And yes, we forgive you for posting that photo so cherished by me -reporting from tropical Thailand-, especially now that the winters are very mild in European countries and we got only very few "winter posts" this year . I always think I miss the snow until I decide to travel in wintertime and realize that I'm not really used to it anymore. It's a bit like documentaries on climbing Mount Everest; great to see on TV but I have to admit I'll never go near it!

As far as 164 maintenance is concerned I have to(mainly due to my incompetence  ) totally agree with you; leave it to a specialist!
