Yes, was an original option. This clarion (CRX111r) fits the last series of 164 because the front design matches the dashboard. This radio was also the standard equipment in the RZ and Lancia Delta Integrale but with "normal" exterior design.

this is from an old Quadrifoglio magazine

Those where the days!

Prices in Lires; I remember you had to remove the last 3 digits and then devide the remaining by 1.5 in order to get close to our prices.

This radio indeed matches the shape of the other buttons!

I can't see it either but I've seen it before!

Hope that Fasani saved it on his harddisk.

Yes, i think it's a good conversion. At that time was quite expensive and very few were sold. The one i've bought is the second i've ever seen. The other one was mounted on a Rosso Proteo q4.

Was it an existing Clarion model (with just the additional "Clarion for Alfa Romeo"-sticker)? Or really a purpose built separate model? In case of the latter it must have been a massive loss for Clarion if they sold so few.

The CRX111r was Clarion top of the line and was a factory option for many cars at that time, such as Saab and Lancia (here in Italy it's well known because was the original equipment of the Lancia Delta Evoluzione).

However, the CRX111r for the Alfa 164 had a different button design, made to have a better match with the second series 164 dashboard and it also has got the "Clarion for Alfa Romeo" script

At least it has a detachable front if I see it correctly, which should hopefully prevent theft. I must say it does look special and fitting with the dash of the 164. Nice find, congrats!
