Rebuilding a 1993 Super 24V

In summer of 2013 I bought this Super 24V in the Stuttgart region. I was looking for a car like this for a long time:
blue outside, inside tan leather, with sunroof and low milage.



The previous owner is an Italian who works for Daimler. He used the car only to go to South Italy in summer. I visited at a Subura garage where the owner was able to do service works at this car. Thus the milage of 100k km is evident from other documents but not the service book.

I picked the car on my way back from Zürich to Hamburg. After that I parked the car at my parents home before it was brought to the garage for rebuilding it in last autumn.

Well, I have stored it in a barn. Last autumn it it turned out that the engine has too low compression. So I decided not to do any investments. On the hand I am not willing to throw a 164 away.

Last summer I went to the garage because the rear axle did feel inflexible. A rusty rear axle and some rusty spots were found:

Thus it was time for a complete overhaul of the suspension and moreover for rust removal.

I got a list from garagist which parts were needed and collected most of them in the meantime. Just had to learn that front shock absorbers are not available anymore. Thus I ordered 2 in bad conditions for the meantime while the original ones will be refurbished (at Nagengast, it was a tip here in the forum).

The bumpers and skirts were removed to wash the car underneath. Afterwards some minor rust spots were evident.

Unfortunately my 164 Automatic doesnot work properly either: it needs a new air cooler / radiator for the gearbox which has to be custom made

Thus I don't have any granturismo on hand, just right now when German Autobahn is nearly empty - Just could repeatedly go from Hamburg-Zurich in 7 - 8 hours from door to door including fill ups with the 156 V6 (with winter tires on limited to 190 km/h). 2 hours less than before. Last time that I could manage the way in this time was round about 2013/14 with the 164 (with higher top speed).

The 164 does not look too bad, what is the mileage on it?

Good choice sending the shocks to Nagengast, I can only recommend them

At least you still have an Alfa Romeo V6 to drive

The milage is low, just 120k km.

Today my garagist called me and told me he just did a similar job at my Automatic. It had rust spots and the end of the rear wheel arches. But the sill shall be in excellent condition. Now the car be waxed underneath.

Very nice work on your 164s. All those rust points are comnmon. Evry 164 has or will have rust there at some point. The target is to get to it before it is really bad.

The Automatic now is done and ready to drive it into the garage - just waiting for the needed gearbox oil cooler
