Boge adjustable dampers - rebuild document

Post by Maffia_Alfista » Wed Sep 18, 2013 10:40 pm

Found this gem while surfing the outer rims of the interweb ;)

http://www.omifacsimiles.com/alfa/boge_rebuild.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Who will be first. Quite a large job but on the other hand new ones are expensive and rare..

I think some one on this site is trying to do this, but I don't remember if the thread was here or on alfabb (where I assume you found the info).

This is great news. The left rear one is leaking on my QV. The plan was to substitute the original dampers with koni sports and store the boges until rebuild info was available. Well now it seems to be there. If there is someone undertaking the process already, I think I'll wait for the tips and tricks report with pics/vids :D

Hi Guys,

in summer I bought a 1993 24V with just 100k km and full history. The car has the electonic dampers as well. On the way home through entire Germany it felt as the would not work (a judgement after many miles of driving 156 only).

For sure I will check the dampers if the electric connections are in order. But if the dampers (at least one of them) should be at the end of lifetime would you replace them? Chris, who founded the German 164 forum and who has deep knowledge of 164 once issued that the adjustable dampers are not so much ahead of the regular ones. He continued that the "normal" position would be even a bit more tight as the regulars are.

In brief: are the adjustable dampers much more fun to drive and worth to keep them?

I sometimes drive with some fellow Alfisti in my 164 Q, and then it's very nice to have the option "Normal". Otherwise it's not a fun drive for the passengers.....lol

Yeah, I know what obenhaus is referring to; sometimes I put mine in "hooligan"-mode (mood?) and this not fun for my fellow passengers. I quite enjoy it though.

Does the lack of comfort at least increases the handling significantly better? Where does it increase most: on snaking roads or at high speed?

This manual was made by Steven, he is also a AlfaBB member.

I also saved this manual and working on to get the parts.. the sealholder where sold out by Steven, a friend made a CAD drawing and i asked a CNC specialist to make some seal holders, if there is more interest in rebuilding the struts i'm willing to order more sealholders and parts.

I have a set of used Boge dampers waiting to be rebuilt at some later point in time. I would gladly take a set or two of the needed parts, so please count me in and order some more.

I am interested in a set for both my 164 Q4 and Thema 8.32. I think that the seal holder would be the same for FWD 164's and Lancia Thema's, but what about the 164 Q4?

Please note that the rebuild manual was recently revised to include information on the re-chroming of the rods. One of our Alfa BB members took it upon himself to have his pitted and scored rods professionally refurbished by an electroplating specialist. This is very welcome news indeed, as now there are practically no limitations to the rebuild.

How have you got on sourcing the parts? If you have the contacts I would be very interested.

Post by pinino » Wed Apr 08, 2015 5:10 pm

Dear All,

I recently found a new CNC machinist and received the first specimens and they are perfect. Same price as before, $15 apiece, plus shipping. Shipping FOB New York : within US - $5.50 for set of 4 [total $65.50]; to Europe - $15 [total $75].

Hopefully, I will very soon be able to put my Q4 aside for some TLC and this will be on my list. I will get back to you.

I have a used set of Boge struts and dampers that need re-building and will be glad to share the cost of machined seal holders. I have a V6 TB that requires suspension improvement and I would like to fit the Boge units with a simple switch to the solenoids. Your advice will be appreciated.

Any Dutch 164's to Buitenlandrit 2015?

Kind regards from England

" I have a V6 TB that requires suspension improvement and I would like to fit the Boge units with a simple switch to the solenoids. Your advice will be appreciated. "

My advice would be : don't do it!

One scenario: what happens when you are cruising at 70 mph in "soft" and suddenly have to slam on the brakes? In the oem setup the suspension ecu immediately switches the suspension to "rigid" based >20 psi of brake pressure.

And there are other equally dangerous scenarios. If you want to run the Boges on "rigid" all the time (which is stiffer that standard struts), that would not be a problem.

Here's link to an overview of how the CDS ecu is programmed to switch between "soft" and "rigid" in AUTO mode.

I thought that someone in this forum knew a company in Poland that refurbishes the adjustable suspension for Alfa 164 - but I cannot find it. Can anyone help me?
