Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
Hi Wilco been chating to alfamegatron on the ao site and suddenly occured to ask if your diag will do the abs cycle needed to bleed the abs?
Re: Success w Alfa164Diagnostics
After weeks of striking out with cheaper cable/adapter kit, I managed to clear the airbag light on my 95 LS using Wilco/Dimtey/Arjen/Allen Alfa 164 Diagnostcs 1.0.16 software and the following FTDI-based usb to obd cable and adapter kit:
GUZZIDIAG DUCATIDIAG KIT - INTERFACE + ADAPTOR [LEZBGUZKIT01] - £19.99 : Lonelec, Fault Code Readers & ECU Diagnostic Equipment
Lonelec gave good service, with one-week delivery to the U.S. at reasonable Royal Mail price. Here is the link for the kit: http://www.lonelec.co.uk/index.php?main ... ucts_id=50" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I could not get the job done with the following VAG-COM cable and three-wire adapter kit previously purchased on Amazon,
as the OBD/USB cable apparently had a generic chip which would not allow installment of Wilco's drivers.

Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
Dear Friends,
I was delighted to see the 164 diagnostic software so I bought a 16pin to USB cable as well as a 16 pin to 3 pin adapter with 2 clips for voltage, from eBay. However, when I am installing, I having problems.
This is the cable I have.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Newest-MPPS- ... 1059140166" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I am using Windows 7 32 bit. I extracted the 32bit zip file to a folder. Went to device manager and found the USB cable listed under 'Other Devices'. Right click, update driver and did browse to the extracted folder. But I get this message (Windows was unable to install your Amt Flash)
Since it didn't work, I tried installing the software that came with the mini CD, which works. But then the 164 diagnostic software does not detect the cable.
Please note that I didn't try to connect the cable to the car yet, since it wasn't detected by the software in the first place. Could you please help me?
Thank you very much.

Hello friends,
I just figured out installing the cable

Device Manager->Select Device->Update Driver->Browse my computer for Driver Software->Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer->Have Disk->Browse to ftdiport.inf
Few warnings came for digital signature issues but did install successfully. Then I set that to COM port 1 and voila the 164 diagnostic software picked the cable up

This is what I unsuccessfully did previously

Device Manager->Select Device->Update Driver->Browse my computer for Driver Software-> Browse to CDM 2.08.24 WHQL Certified_adjusted_for_Alfa164Diagnostics
Windows did not automatically pick the file when its browsed to the folder
The car is sent for a strip down, a new paint job is on the way

Thank you dear friends

Does exist an other source for the diag file?

If you have the fdti cable and the 3 pin connector, you can also try multiecuscan which can read 4.1 as well(according to their list).

Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
Hi guys, I finally got the error codes with Wilco's software (thanks Wilco!), could you help me out here?
I did read the ABS code, and in the program it says: "Faulty solenoid valve relay":

I did the paperclip flashing light diagnostics, and there comes the number 12 and 19 (12 being a sequence start/end mark I assume). The error text is probably about the relay located on the ABS pump itself, am I right? What does error code 19 mean?
Then there is this:

Could you give me a hint where to look at? I think all of those disappeared after clearing, but I have to check again after a while. I think Q4 has 2 lambda probes, am I right? How to check if those are not defective?
Thanks!
EDIT: Mystery already solved.

Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
Hello Wilco and the rest!
I was very interested in speaking with the ECU on my '95 164 Twin Spark 2.0L, especially coz I have been unable to bring up the in-built flashing codes via the Alfa-prescribed method of stomping on the gas pedal 5 times with ignition on (or something similar.. I've forgotten the exact method)
So I purchased these:
1. 3 pin OBD to 16pin OBD 2 cable
http://www.ebay.com/itm/171708242127?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2. VAGCOM OBD 2 Cable:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/171119127082?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Then I downloaded the software created by Wilco (kudos for that! Great stuff!) and downloaded the first update and had it installed.
Then downloaded the second update as well and had it installed too. It gave a warning saying files are already written in this folder or something along these lines. I opted to install latest update anyway.
Connected cable to PC (Windows 7 64-bit) and drivers auto-installed and cable got picked up by the 164Diagnostic program.
I then opened up the panel right next to the drawer in the passenger side. Found a 3-pin cable with a cap fitted to have it closed when unused. It had 3 wires: BLACK, GREEN/BLUE and RED (with white stripe) . Same as on a picture I found on this same thread. Connected 3-Pin OBD1 to 16 pin OBD2 cable. Connected both alligator clips in same cable to passenger-side footwell illumination light connectors. (figured out + / - with the help of a LED bulb). [I'm pretty sure it gives 12V although I have NOT tested it.]
On a side note, even with the hoodlight (to which the footwell lights are connected) turned off, the footwell light used to power up as soon as I connect the BLACK aligator clip to the (-) wire of the footwell light regardless of whether the RED aligator clip is attached to (+) wire of footwell light. This turned on all the interior lights and would go off as soon as I disconnect the BLACK aligator cable. I am pretty ignorant at these stuff, and so I believe everything is normal / this is how it should be?
With the 3 pin cable and it's 2 aligator connectors connected, I clipped in the blue OBD2 VAGCOM cable and hooked up the other end to USB port on my laptop. Opened up the program, and it detected the cable at port 5. Tried the remaining 2 USB ports to try and get it to connect to PORT 1 as recommended by many in this thread, but it showed PORT 6 and 7 respectively. So re-connected to PORT 5, re-opened the program and with the cable detected, I clicked the CONNECT button. I got an error: Could not communicate to ECU or something along those lines.
Kept trying multiple times but to no avail.
Then I hooked up my spare ECU and tried. Still did not work.
Any ideas on what I may have done wrong? Or my ECU isn't supported?
Thank you,
Zaid

Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
From what I recall the ECU in the TS versions should also be supported, but I never tried that.
I am not sure which 3-pin plug you found, is it at the center console or at the door? It should be at the center console (quite sure that is the case for all 164's), the 3-pin plug at the door is most likely for the airbag, if your car is so equipped.
I have no problems whether it is found as port 1 or 2, but can't comment if higher numbers are problematic. To be sure you got 12V supply, use a multimeter to measure it.
That is what I could think of, hope it helps.

Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
Hi.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I searched center console and yes there was a 3 pin wire very much close to the large ecu wiring connector. Definitely has to be the obd cable.
Connected ground to black wire, and direct 12v supply to red alligator clip from battery. Used multimeter to verify. 12.42v reading.
What I did:
1. Connected all physical connectors (first plugged in 3 pin obd 1 cable to obd outlet, and connected 16 pin end to obd 2 cable. Connected ground and 12v alligator clips.)
2. Connected usb end of 16pin obd 2 Cable to laptop.
3. Opened Wilcos software. (detected cable at Port 9)
4. Turned on ignition.
5. Clicked connect.
Didn't connect. No communication to ecu. No ecu identification number. Nothing.
I must say that the cables are all brand new and no obvious sign of damage or anything.
Perhaps the port 9 is the issue? Then why does it still detect the cable?
I also just remembered that we had an aftermarket burglar alarm system installed to the car. It could crank engine, release trunk etx in addition to basic burglar alarm features.
However, this was disconnected long time ago. I followed ecu wiring today and found that although alarm system is no longer being used, the alarm control unit, wiring, relays etc are all still in place. Some wires have been Disconnected but almost everything else is still in place including wiring to the control box.
May be those who fixed it, tapped in to the ecu wiring or something and now ecu is not sending output through the obd connector?
I disconnected wiring from alarm control unit and tried again. Same story.
Oh, I'm doing all this to just figure out what on earth is wrong coz car doesn't start normally. Multiple cranks before it starts and unstable idle and acceleration from idle to 2000rpm.
In order to see if readings are accurate during diagnostics, I disconnected tps connector, coolant temp sensor connector, idle actuator sensor, maf sensor and all connections on both coil packs. (this won't be a reason why there is no reading from ecu, yeah??)
I also messed around with the bar at the bottom of the diag program but still same story.
Confused.
Any idea / help on the matter?
Thanks for the help and support!!

Re: Alfa164Diagnostics
I don't see any mention of the RPM sensor being tested?
Since the car can start, I don't think that there is an issue with the wiring from the aftermarket system in relation to the ECU or diagnostics part. I would try to get a lower port number, if possible, as that is a question of the priority in the system.
However, I would suggest to measure resistance in the wires from the 3 pin plug to the ECU plug to be sure that you got the correct plug and that the wires are connected.

Quick question: does the scan tool have short and long term fuel trim data (Motronic 3.7, 164 Q4)? What are FRA_1_factor, FRA_2_factor, TRA_1_factor and TRA_2_factor?

Hello,
Sorry if not appropiate but I still have some VAGCOM cable sets for sale to diagnose your Alfa 164 with Wilco's software or MultiECUscan/FiatECUscan. Cable comes with 12v power plug instead of pictured crocodile plugs.
Price is 30 euro INCL shipping in Europe (from Holland).
