As you may have seen on my other threads, a horrendous misfire, more like a hard ignition cut, became apparent at around 2500 rpm, but with a fluctuting rough idle, i suspected the Air Flow Meter was finally failing altogether.
However, after eliminating everything under the bonnet i thought i'd at least try the diag socket, and both the 164 diag program and multiecuscan identified ecu power drivers or actuator drivers depending on the program.
The ecu was sat right in front of me anyway as its in the passenger side of the centre console along with the diag socket, and all appeared normal, until i opened up the socket connector to find around 30 connection pins swimming!
So, all dried cleaned and repaired, the cars is back to its former awesomeness, but, i'm now looking to cure once and for all the problem, which as the thread title suggests, i'm told this was not unheard of back when 164's were current.
A £2.50 car wash would often result in a £700 ecu bill. Somewhere there is a weakness in the firewall sealing, or a grommet or similar, water runs down the loom straight into the upward mounting connector, Smart!
So be warned folk, this could be anyone of you guys next rain storm or car wash!
Time to start sealing, siliconning, foaming etc etc....
An old issue rear it's ugly head!
Re: An old issue rear it's ugly head!
Looking at that, I am surprised you have been able to start the car at all!!!
At least you find the reason, the leak might be harder. Placing the ECU differently might be the first thing to do...

Yep, i was amazed it started at all too, but it was getting tougher the more i was trying stuff so i'm sure it would have got to that point shortly.
agreed, finding the water source could be tricky, but possibly, or even largely contributed to internal condensation from being stood around for quite a period here in damp ol'blighty!
i spotted then droplets forming and ignored it too long, My Bad!

Ouch, that's definitely something to keep an eye on then. Thankfully it doesn't rain much in the UK...pfft yeah right!
