What is the right way to take off and replace the starter unit on 164 3L V6 1988 ?

Well boys I did not wait for answers of course.
There is no way other on a 3.0L V6 in order to take down the starter:
plenum
exhaust pipe
starter hot shield
exhaust tube
middle gear shaft

It can be done without pulling the middle driwe shaft
At least on 2.0V6 - but the rest was the same

Correct, same procedure I used for my Q4 (without removing the drive shaft or gear linkage) so valid also for a Q4 drivetrain. This job overall is a PITA, 3 bolts only on the starter but in horrible location, some accessed from top, some from bottom. Needs a good size extension for the wrench (not too long, not too short). Plan for a few long hours, busted knuckles and a few beers on the way as well
