As already seen in the previous pictures; in the end I decided to have the paint done professionally in the off-hours of a bodyshop. I just could not get it to the finish consistently as I wanted.

The last part was very difficult. Could not get the engine to run. Turned out that both fuel pump and injectors got stuck and partially damaged even. I suspect the ethanol in the gasoline that can attract water when stored for a long time.

Many small items are still not up to my standards. Striving (too) much for perfection. I had long been in doubt about the wheels but I decided in the end to go for refurbished original wheels. Bit of work still to do on them.

I stripped the original paint/laquer of with a chemical paint stripper. Took me 2 rounds and a 3rd on some sticky remains. After that I sanded the surface smooth. The original finish was from when the wheels were machined so it had some kind of circle pattern in it. I placed the wheel on a selfmade setup so that I could rotate it while holding a not too fine sandpaper in the same place. That created the circle pattern. Just before that I painted the holes black. After sanding in the circles I applied clear coat.
The wheels were straight and the little curb side damage I just sanded away. Also there was some aluminium oxidation that I could partially sand away.

Overall the wheel look really nice. If you look really close you can see that they are not perfect but this is enough.

At the Zandvoort race track in a classic car event where I was the only one with a 164. It gathered a crowd every now and then.

I went to Zandvoort again; this time for the Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo. I am volunteer there every year for technical support. That also means be there early on Saturday (sometimes even on Fridays), have little sleep Saturday night and leave late Sunday night. Sounds bad and it is fantastic :D

ImageIMG_20180825_064212_1 by M R, on Flickr
Somehow the rainy early hours of Saturday created a light colour that fits very nice the colour and lines of my 164. So much more elegant than the Giulietta in front of it.

ImageSAM_5145 by M R, on Flickr
Over the weekend I spotted a little over 10 164's which was a lot but still made it one of the rarer cars on the event. If you exclude race cars it was probable only the 8C, Matta and TZ that were in smaller numbers. This year I also did not see any Rio or Arna. A Junior Zagato, a SZ/RZ or a 4C each had at least 2 or 3 times more cars as representation. So... maybe next year more 164's?
ImageSAM_5167 by M R, on Flickr

In between my activities I had every now and then time for some pictures and visiting the stands with Alfa parts. I had one success; the caps in the wheels.

Great photos and nice to see the 164 being well represented :)

For the first time ever, we are having a similar event (though on a smaller scale...) in the north, at Ring Knutstorp in the south in Sweden. I am part of the organizing committee and I hope to see many Alfa Romeos there, including 164s.

How was the Nordic Spettacolo? I spend quite a bit of time in Sweden typically (Gothenburg and Stockholm regions) but usually fly there. Would not mind to visit some events with my cars next year maybe.

Participated in a classic rally with the Alfa (first time since the restoration) and we won. Great pictures too.

After a few months of winter storage, my 164 is back on the road since this weekend. It started up without a problem!

Although there are still many finishing touches, this year I hope to only work on some essentials; like a new exhaust. Other than that it is time to drive it a bit more. Should be possible since both LT campervan and Corvette are in the workshop for service and some repairs. And even though for the Corvette all parts can still be purchased (what a difference from the Alfa) the shipping (from the USA) takes up a lot of time. More time to drive the Alfa then.

It's been a while since the last update.

2019 brought a few events. Classic car (night) rallies.
Image
Image
Image

It also brought a new exhaust from the manifold down. Non-Alfa parts but according to Alfa original specs. I was so happy that it sounded still exactly the same as before. A perfect balance of sporty and distinction. I was also glad that all of the resonation (the catalyst brick failed) was gone now.

And the SSAR on circuit Zandvoort. Lot of elbow grease to get it so shiny again.
Image
Image

After winter storage we started 2020 with a small service. Where we met some other Italian vehicles.
Image
It got a working A/C again and the sensor for the watertemperature was exchanged. MOT passed without any comments.

And another round of good cleaning
Image
Image
Image

2020 turned out to be a very different year than planned. I had entered the 164 for an event in the UK at Goodwood circuit in May and many classic car rallies. All got cancelled. SSAR also got cancelled. On a positive note; I also bought a house with garages and we have since moved there. Now all my classics have a storage at home.
Image
Image

There was one event that got organized. An all (unusual) cars little event at a small car museum. It was summer but raining.
Image
Image
Image
Image

But even though we have done some touring in the area we did not get out of this season what we planned.
Image
In storage now. Early spring will bring a new clutch as this one is on it's way of giving up.

Thanks. And Merci bien (I speak some French, but not much).

Another milestone is in sight: The wishlist of technical part is nearly done. The clutch did not feel quite right so I had it replaced. Also the clutch bearing was a little noisy so that one is also replaced. With that preventive also various seals (driveshaft, crankshaft) and new transmission oil. At the same time all the hydraulics of the clutch (both cilinders, hose and oil) have been replaced as well. The slave cilinder turned out to be not 100% anymore also. After the replacement the alignment needed to be checked and it turned out the last time it was aligned the rear axle wasn't set perfectly.

So now very good shifting again and even a slightly more stability in low speed corners. There is now nothing left on the car that you would expect service or repair in the next years. And even the electrics behave well. It really drives as when it was new.
Except for one new little failure: the display for the mileage (odometer) has failed. I will replace that one.

With the technology sorted there is also time for the last few touches. Some rubbers to be replaced (underside of the doors). The trunk lining needs replacement also. The bronze trim around front and rear bumper can use a replacement. And there is a slight tear in the rear seat velours that needs fixing. And maybe I will make the radio proper functioning. But more importantly; I hope to drive it a lot before it is winter again. Since te A/C is working again it is even great for hot days in summer.

I had the same and drove it 9 years long, what's this engine in its guts, it was a VERY fast car much faster than some V6

I have been working in a LANCIA shop but never had the luck to drive this
GAMMA knowing the engine is very interesting I regret not having enough money to have one now
