I got this from my best distributor today! Nobody knows where it came from, and I don't care Reinz full head gasket set for 3.0 V6 12V. Price 1/3 of a regular price for this sets. Of course I took it immediately! I just need to buy few more gaskets for lower part, but no problem, because everything is easy to get and costs only few €.

So my engine rebuild cost is reduced by around 150-200€ already! Can't be happier!

wow can not believe the amount of rust in your 164's
The 164's in Australia will all of my 3 164's have no rust mind you we also do not have snow in South Australia

I have only few things for 164 uploaded on website. Didn't have time yet to add things for 164. And also in Slovenia there is almost none 164 left.

So far so good. Started looking what have I bought. It looks ok good so far. Also looks like it could really have under 200k km. And that I am first one that is opening it. Gaskets look original, also original timing belg Dayco Alfa Romeo.








Also I have start gathering material. Supension parts, engine parts, brakes, etc.

It was very good at first. And then it went downhill Somebody has run this engine on very bad and old oil probably. Otherwise it would be like new!

For heads it looked good, but then no more. Camshafts ok, bridges very bad.






And best part. Crankshaft. Full of scratches. Like 3 crankshafts in 2 3.0 V6 12V motors of friend.

Suggestions welcome! Did you already have same problem with 3.0 engines? How bad is this oil pump, crankshaft and camshaft bridges? What to do? Polishing crankshaft probably wont fix this.

To be honest with you it doesn't look that bad actually. Camshaft caps are made from alloy and that scratches are pretty common, but fine. Con rod bearings also looks fine. Crankshaft main bearings not so fine, but not seized. Take out that crankshaft and measure it (download the cardisc for more info). In my opinion buy new bearings, polish crankshaft and it should be fine These engines are long lasting and reliable. You should also check play between valve stem and valve guide. On almost every engine at least exhaust valve guides are worn which causes oil consumption and lack of compression in higher revs. Also if you are trying to build QV you should know that it has different engine. It has intake camshafts with higher lift and higher compression pistons. Maybe it would be easier and also cheaper to buy original QV.

Something showed up and I couldn't let it go. So I bought 164 3.0 V6 12V. Year 1988! Driven by sea all the time.I got chassis with minimal rust and friend got engine for Alfa 75.

It was fastest delivery ever. On friday I went to see it and on sunday I got it delivered from 450km away from me.

Delivery looked brutal! Made whole show haha. Biggest auto transport truck and only my 164 up. It looked great

Finally I got REAL Alfa. Made by Alfa, V6 engine and before 1990

Finally took out crankshaft. It looks not so good. I hope that it can be saved by polishing. Otherwise I need to find another one. Will see what specialist will say about it.

I just approved it only now and since it gives some comments on the state of the engine and what should be replaced/overhauled in his opinion makes it a worthwhile addition to this thread. So. Only 1 week has past and few new things.

First. I took apart blue 3.0. Better then TS, but still now exactly what I was hoping for. It got bumps everywhere. Floor not straight, radiator support panel cca 2cm back in chassis. Rear around arms also rotten. Strange thing is rotten around roof on few spots. Never seen this before on 164. Wiring disconnected, cut, etc. Half car doesnt work.
And for last! I found out that idiot put SUPER doors on old chassis. All because of new panels And nothing in doors works of course.

Next. Friend went bought 164 2.5 TD Super. He needs engine for Chrysler. I went with him and as soon as I saw it, I already had another 164 . Car is in really good condition. Everything on car works! Last 164 1998 year. I was sure that it will have a lot of rust because it was in Slovenia all the time. And then surprise! Fingers crossed that this will finally be good chassis.

I also went with crankshaft to specialist. They checked it and polish it, because everything is ok. They said only STD bearings and that's it. That it should run without problem!

So I presume you brought that 1988 3.0 L 12V to the scrapyard? This latest one looks a lot better!

3.0 will go to scrapyard yes It could still be saved, but pointless. I won't have two 164 projects.

Engine from 2.5 TD super taken out. Chassis so far looking great! Finally what I have been looking for many years.











Susension also almost without rust! Springs and shock absorbers in great condition. I wanted to order new spring lower mount. No need. Those are almost like new!





Around shock absorber also no rust and holes!



Also no rust around engine frame



Untouched front radiator support panel



Floor nothing bend. No rust also visible anywhere. And all 4 jacking points still normal. Also reinforcement on super model from chassis to engine frame.









Trunk everything looks like new when comparing with 1. series chassis.

And under all this, chassis like new!




My cat taking notes and comparing to Alfa engine manuals It looks good. One bearing a little under suggested size but it will have to do!

Indeed. Finally chassis that will be pleasure to work on.

Nothing big new. Only complete measuring crankshaft. It is not perfect but I think that it should be good. It is a little to much worn on main bearing at crank pulley and a little oval on main bearing at flywheel. I'll get it balanced for sure.

First are main bearings from pulley to flywheel. Second are half bearings, from pulley to flywheel.

Tensioner took apart. Bearing garbage so I ordered new.






Oil pump measured and cleaned. Condition like new. Almost nothing wear. So oiled and put together.

And new bearing for tensioner. It is for 24V so I need to change middle part with 12V part. And it is for Fiat 164 3.0 V6 12V

My worst nightmare. Dashboard in 164 and million cables. But as I figured out If you go smart it is now that kind of problem. Connectors and few cables through firewall and that is it. So I took it our of 3.0 V6. Dashboard is destroyed because of sun. So I only need to take out 2 more. From my TS and put wiring from 3.0 on it. And from Super because iz TD wiring and instal TS dashboard with 3.0 wiring. Easy right?

3.0 current look Chassis is not that bad. It will be shame to throw it away, but I won't rebuild another 164.. It anybody wants chassis, it is free to collect from my place, Slovenia
